Global Terrorism Index Reports 250% Increase in Far Right Terrorism
Yesterday co-founder and executive director Bjørn Ihler was featured on Scope with Waqar Rizvi on Pakistani channel Indus News to discuss the recent Global Terrorism Index report that revealed a 250% increase in terrorism from the far right. This is consistent among others with what we see in the research for the Khalifa Ihler Institute Hate-Map that can be found on www.khalifaihler.org/hate-map While terrorism related death globally has gone down by 15% the shift in balance and drastic increase in far right terrorism especially in the US, Europe and Oceania is a worrying trend. The Khalifa Ihler Institute seeks to address this, not only by unveiling the global trends of violently denying diversity, but by working for SDG16 and peace and reconciliation of polarized communities, including in communities in regions that largely are perceived to be at peace.
By applying conflict-resolution strategies to these communities we hope to mend rifts in the social fabric, fight polarization and build sorely needed trust in public and democratic institutions as a remedy to conspiracy theories, hate filled rhetoric, and direct violence stemming from the far right.
Watch this space as we develop our comprehensive strategy and efforts to challenge these trends and the global growth of the far right. The full report from the Global Terrorism Index can be found here: GTI-2019web.pdf (economicsandpeace.org)
